Proxima Centauri is the nearest star to Earth after the Sun, located 4.24 light-years away in the southern constellation of Centaurus. It is a member of the Alpha Centauri star system, being identified as component Alpha Centauri C and is currently 12,950 AU (0.2 light-year) from AB, which it orbits with a period of about 550,000 years. It is a small, low-mass (about an eighth of the mass of our sun) red dwarf star (class M5.5), that is too dim to be seen with the naked eye. As a flare star, it frequently releases intense bursts of radiation and magnetic flares far more powerful than those of our Sun. Proxima Centauri has three confirmed planets, known as Proxima Centauri b, c and d. Apparent magnitude 11.13.
