Sunspots are dark, cooler patches on the Sun’s photosphere caused by intense, concentrated magnetic fields, typically appearing in cycles of roughly 11 years. Sunspots are directly linked to aurora activity. During times of low sunspot activity, solar minimum, auroras are less frequent. Conversely, when the Sun is active, more sunspots appear, often leading to northern and southern lights that can be seen further from the poles than usual.
