Red sun observed in the late afternoon due to bushfires around Sydney. 19 Dec 2019. During a bushfire, smoke particles in the air scatter away the shorter blue and green wavelengths of sunlight much more effectively than the longer red wavelengths. This leaves only the red light to travel straight through to your eyes, making the sun appear deep red or orange.
