M 42 Orion Nebula, a diffuse nebula south of Orion’s Belt, 1,267 light-years away. It is one of the brightest nebulae and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky, and is the brightest feature of a chain of objects called the Sword of Orion. William T. Olcott remarked words failed utterly to described its beauty. T. W. Webb described it as one of the most wonderful objects in the heavens. Apparent magnitude of 4.0.
