NGC 6974 is a bright knot of glowing gas that forms part of Pickering's Triangle within the massive Veil Nebula supernova remnant located in south-eastern Cygnus. Together with NGC 6979, it forms one of the two nodes of one of the brightest regions of this supernova remnant. The entire Veil Nebula is the expanded debris shell of a star 20 times more massive than the sun, that exploded roughly 10,000 to 20,000 years ago and is about 1,400 to 2,400 light years from Earth. Apparent magnitude NGC 6974, 5.0, NGC 6979, 7.5.
