NGC 6979 is a bright region of the Veil Nebula, located in the constellation of Cygnus about 2,400 light years from Earth. The Veil Nebula is a supernova remnant, the glowing remains of a massive star that exploded more than 10,000 years ago. While 'Pickering's Triangle' is a common name for a feature within the Veil Nebula, it's important to note that NGC 6979 is not Pickering's Triangle itself, but rather a nearby, brighter area of the nebula, and Pickering's Triangle has no formal NGC designation.
